The presidents of Chad and Sudan agreed Tuesday to restore diplomatic ties
between the two countries by reopening their mutual embassies.
The agreement was made during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chadian
president, Idris Deby. Deby won the presidential elections in May 2006
gaining more than 60 percent of the votes.
Also attending the ceremony were the presidents of Sudan, Libya and Gabon,
as well as the president of the African Union.
The conflict between Sudan and Chad, which began a few months ago,
threatened to deteriorate into a full-fledged war. Sudan's president 'Umar
Al-Bashir and his Chadian colleague, Deby, promised to work together to
strengthen peace between their countries. Deby, however, asserted that a
neutral force must spread across the border in order to prevent further
friction.
